Poinsettias and Holiday Lights

Holiday revelers can take time out to stop and smell the poinsettias at Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, One Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (map).

Well, maybe not — since poinsettias don’t exude perfume (the “blooms” are leaf bracts, not flowers). But, in any case, the Winter Flower Show is open in the conservatory through January 6, 2012.

There’s also a new outdoor Winter Light Garden exhibit there, shining with scores of whimsical LED light forms, adding even more enchantment to the public garden’s spectacular seasonal displays.

After being welcomed by a Victorian-style hearth in the Palm Court, Road Trips Gardeners will see elaborate wreaths decorated by staff horticulturists and educators; an 1893 World’s Fair-themed Garden Railroad; a cheerful woodland where bears and cardinals on a tree against a yellow moon with Santa’s silhouette, and Phipps’ own traditional cut fir decorated with thousands of LED lights.

The Winter Light Garden extends the holiday fun into the Outdoor Garden, where there are glowing orbs, “dripping” icicles, luminous trees and a brilliant fountain of light along the meandering pathways; all lights used are LED.

The Winter Flower Show, designed by Bob Vukich, and Winter Light Garden, designed by studio i, run through January 6, 2013. The Winter Flower Show will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Winter Light Garden will be open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Everything closes at 5 p.m. December 24 and reopens at 9:30 a.m. December 26. Admission is $12.
