A NYC Hotel for Gardeners

Your Road Trips Gardener knows that Manhattan isn’t exactly a gardeners destination (aside from Central Park, of course). But those of us heading to the Big Apple might consider splurging on a stay in this Upper East Side boutique hotel.

That’s because the Surrey, 20 East 76th Street, New York, New York, has a seasonal roof garden just for hotel guests.

Located on the Penthouse level, this serene escape is reminiscent of a garden found atop an Upper East Side family townhouse, and reflects the residential ambiance of the hotel.

The roof features Ipe Brazilian decking and trellises, with ivy and box trees growing throughout the garden. Lauren Rottet, the interior and architectural designer who spearheaded The Surrey’s renovation, designed the roof garden to provide guests with a private, restful escape, with breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and Central Park. She envisioned the garden as an extension of a private residence, with the lounge seating and layout reflecting a family’s living room.

Rottet was particularly inspired by traditional English city gardens. With this vision in mind, The Surrey’s roof garden features seasonal florals, ranging from brilliant purple Salvia East Frieslands to the pink, yellow and orange Lantana. Box trees are framed by rows of English dwarf lavender. Rottet intended for the space to appear partially manicured, while seeming to have originally been planted years ago and then recently rediscovered.

The intimate garden is open daily, with food and beverage services from 5 to 11 p.m. (until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays). Guests may order from the dining menu, but do be sure to try the signature “Muddled Lemonade” mixing herbs, fruits and spices with homemade lemonade (available with or without alcohol).

Conjuring a 1920s Beaux-Arts-designed residential townhouse that has evolved over time, The Surrey is an Upper East Side hotel where tradition blends with a unique modern personality. The property, featuring 189 salons and suites, is an independent luxury hotel operated by Denihan Hospitality Group.
