Poinsettias Say Christmas

No flowering plant says “Christmas” more than the poinsettia. Although, technically, the red “blossoms” are really just red-hued leaves, nobody much cares when the result is so spectacular.

One place celebrating National Poinsettia Day December 12, 2010, is Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha’s Botanical Center, 100 Bancroft Street, Omaha, Nebraska. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day, their holiday poinsettia show will give a free plant to the first 100 visitors or families arriving to celebrate this special day.

National Poinsettia Day marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. minister to Mexico, who introduced the native Mexican plant to the United States in the 1800s. Poinsett would ship cuttings of the plant to his greenhouse in Greenville, South Carolina, where he would later propagate them and send them to friends and botanical centers around the United States. Poinsett became the namesake for this popular holiday plant.

The poinsettia show is open today (November 26, 2010) through January 9, 2011, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. More than 5,600 poinsettia plants are grown in Lauritzen Gardens’ greenhouses starting as early as July for this annual holiday show. The exhibit includes a 20-foot-tall poinsettia tree, decorated holiday trees, antique sleighs and several passenger and freight model trains.

In fact, model trains are the stars of this year’s show. Several lines will be whistling and whirring on more than 300 feet of track through the floral display and around dozens of miniature Omaha landmark structures, all constructed of natural materials.

Poinsettias include multi-hued, deep red, sparkling white and speckled poinsettias. Varieties include Winter Rose, Dark Red, Polar Bear, Red Fox, Avantgarde Marble, Red Fox, Pink Cadillac, Ice Punch, Christmas Feelings, Cinammon and Sonora White Glitter. At least 2,000 poinsettia plants are on display at any given time this holiday season.
