The Inner Beauty of Flowers
There’s an absolutely astonishing floral exhibit at Smith College, 15 College Lane, Northampton, Massachusetts, now through September 30, 2010. “The Inner Beauty of Flowers”, on display in the Church Exhibition Gallery of the Lyman Plant House, is a collaboration between The Botanic Garden of Smith College, retired radiologist Merrill C. Raikes MD, and University of Massachusetts physics professor Robert B. Hallock.
X-rays combined with a unique artistic approach bring to light the usually unseen inner structure of flowers. Alongside the radiography, this exhibition provides explanations of the science behind the images: the way light works, how the eye sees, and how x-ray technology can be used to create art.
There’s a slide show of the images here.
More information on how the images were created is also online.
